How To Get Into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode

To put your iPhone into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode, follow these steps carefully. DFU mode is used for deeper system recovery options when standard methods don’t work. Here’s how to do it:

Steps for iPhone 8 or later (including iPhone 15 Pro Max):

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. Open iTunes (or Finder if you’re using macOS Catalina or later).
  3. Press and release the Volume Up button.
  4. Press and release the Volume Down button.
  5. Press and hold the Side (Power) button until the screen turns black.
  6. Once the screen turns black, press and hold the Volume Down button while continuing to hold the Side button for 5 seconds.
  7. After 5 seconds, release the Side button but continue holding the Volume Down button for an additional 10 seconds.
    • If done correctly, the screen will stay black, indicating that you’re in DFU mode. If you see the Apple logo, you’ve held the buttons too long and need to start over.
  8. In iTunes or Finder, you should see a message saying, “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.” You can now restore your iPhone using iTunes or Finder.

To Exit DFU Mode:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Make sure to follow the steps carefully to avoid getting stuck in recovery mode instead of DFU mode.
